PORTRAITURE WITH RICHARD
Portraiture sessions with Richard Wood, are studio based artistry sessions. The studio prides itself in creating the most perfect capture of each special subject. Each sitting is a project in fine art photography where the utmost care in both the posing and lighting is directed. Like all traditional photography, the capture is then adjusted in the darkroom (digital) and seen right through to print. Richard is one of the extremely few photographers in Hawke's Bay who personally sees their product through to completion in-house, from capture to careful control on the paper. Control through each step is what makes every piece the 'artist's own'. For this reason, Richard's portraits are sold as mounted fine art pieces to be framed and treasured in the home. The Fine Art Studio creates artwork in print. However a 'refined, watermarked digital copy for web' of any portrait purchased will be supplied with no further charge to share with friends and relatives afar and abroad.
THE PAINTERLY STYLE
People often remark on how the final works often resemble what could be a painting. How is that? Richard studies and stays true to the old proven and timeless forms of portraiture with these sittings. This is a different focus from the "instagram/pinterest" type aesthetic currently flowing through modern trend. Richard more often than not lights his subjects in the 'Rembrandt' style. Often recognised by the triangle of light the artist managed to align on his subjects cheek. Whilst still a basic practice in traditional photography, much research and experimentation has lead Richard further balancing this style, perfecting it much further. Thus leaving an aesthetic extremely had to replicate.
Richard is a fully qualified and accredited professional photographer graduating from the 4 year Bachelor of Design at Massey University along with a 3 year Bachelor of Business. An accredited, qualified member of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography.
In 2013 Richard has been twice awarded the title of 'Grand Master of the NZIPP', the highest distinction of the Institute. An accomplishment shared with only 11 other photographers in New Zealand. Richard was also awarded the coveted title of Professional Photographer of the Year three times in 2011, 2014 and 2017. Second placings within 'The International Colour Awards' in the portrait division has earned Richard the title of Honorary International Colour Master.
